Navigating VA Benefits

A Guide for Caregivers of Aging Veterans

Caring for a Veteran comes with unique responsibilities, and ensuring they receive the benefits they’ve earned is a key part of that journey. Whether your loved one is in need of medical care, disability compensation, or other forms of support, there are valuable resources available through the Veterans Administration (VA) and the State of Maryland.

Step 1: Enroll in the VA System

Before your Veteran can access any VA health benefits, they’ll need to be enrolled in the VA health care system. The first step is obtaining a Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC). This card is crucial for receiving care at VA facilities and accessing other health-related benefits.

There are two ways to apply:

  • In-person: Visit your local VA Medical Center with a current, unexpired ID. You’ll speak with an enrollment coordinator who can guide you through the process.
  • Online: For those who prefer a digital route, you can apply via the VA’s AccessVA system. You’ll need to upload a photo and a digital copy of your current ID. Once submitted, the VHIC will typically arrive by mail within ten business days.

Important Documentation: The DD 214

Every Veteran should have a copy of their Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (DD 214). This document is essential when applying for both state and federal benefits. As a caregiver, it’s important to know where this document is kept, as it can open the door to a wide range of support, including:

  • Disability compensation (tax-free)
  • Aid for Veteran-owned small businesses
  • Veterans Pension program
  • Adult Day Health Care at VA medical centers, State Veterans Homes, or approved community organizations, like Winter Growth
  • Aid and attendance or housebound allowance
  • Disability housing grants
  • Life insurance options
  • Burial eligibility in a Maryland State or VA national cemetery

Each of these benefits can make a significant difference in the quality of life for both Veterans and their caregivers, so it’s worth taking the time to explore what may be available to your loved one.

Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs) in Howard and Montgomery Counties, Maryland

Both Howard and Montgomery Counties are home to strong and active Veteran communities – with multiple Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs), which can provide camaraderie, advocacy, and additional resources. If your Veteran is not yet connected to one of these organizations, see below for a list and links to several Howard County VSOs, as well as a link to a comprehensive list of VSOs in Montgomery County:

Each VSO is made up of Veterans from various military branches and holds regular meetings. These organizations not only support Veterans but also provide a community where caregivers can find guidance and companionship.

Final Thoughts

As a caregiver, helping a Veteran access their benefits can feel overwhelming at times, but the rewards are great. These programs can offer financial relief, medical support, and even social connections that improve well-being. If you have questions or need assistance navigating the process, don’t hesitate to seek help from your local VA Medical Center or a Veterans Service Organization.
